Though Hannah was reserved, and Anne “loved being the centre of attention”, the girls became best friends. Aged five, she met Anne Frank on her first morning at the Montessori nursery school in Amsterdam in 1934. Hannah Pick-Goslar, the late author of My Friend Anne Frank, was the daughter of a German Jewish politician who fled Berlin in 1933. Two new perspectives on Anne’s story bring the Nazis’ destruction of families into sharp focus – with one unintentionally demonstrating the truth of intergenerational trauma: for survivors, the family itself can be an instrument of violence for the next generation. ![]() ![]() Not only Anne, but her sister Margot and mother Edith died in Bergen-Belsen in early 1945 her father Otto Frank was the only survivor. Eighty years after the terrible facts – the car pulling up by the canal, the four men in the hallway, one holding a revolver, screaming in German “Wo sind die Juden?” (“Where are the Jews?”) – it is easy to forget that Anne Frank’s story is as much about a family tragedy as about the slight, intense young girl who personifies the Holocaust’s atrocity.
