The National Championships of the NRA have been an important part of the National Match program from the beginning. The National Defense Act of 1916 authorized participation of civilian teams from each state. The Matches were established by an act of Congress in 1903 and were shot for the first time that year with participation limited to teams from the Regular Service and state National Guard organizations. The National Matches are held with the approval of the Secretary of the Army under the general supervision of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice. The National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice (NBPRP) conducts the National Trophy Individual and Team Matches for the Service pistol and Service rifle, as well as the National Trophy Infantry Team Match.
